On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

Who inspires you?

Blog every day in May, day 30 (!!!): Who inspires you? Are they close to you? Somebody famous? Or even somebody infamous?

You. Yes you. You inspire me, whoever you are.

If you have put a smile on your face in the direst of circumstances, if you have given hope to someone else when all your hope was gone, if you have been strong and determined in the face of unrelenting pressure to give up or give in… If you have held someone’s hand as they died, if you have battled death yourself and won (or not), if you have saved someone’s life through a small act or a great one… If you have worked hard every day, if you have taken risks to make your life better, if you have made sacrifices to help someone else… If you have ever cried alone, if you have ever doubted yourself, if you have ever thought that the world would be better off without you – and yet got up the next day and kept on…  If you find joy in small things and beauty in the everyday… If you have risen to great heights and remained humble or fallen to great depths and held your head high… If you have ignored what the world thinks or expects of you and forged your own path… If you have ever done something you were told you couldn’t, or even if you just tried… If you have learnt without being taught… If you have shared without expecting in return… If you have ever embarrassed yourself just to make someone laugh… If you are capable of great patience or great silliness… If you have kindness in your heart… Then I admire you, and you inspire me.

Thank you.
