On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

This is why

This is why I love them so much.

This is what makes me happy.

This is the best thing in the world ever.

This is why I take pictures. To remember these moments.

I found these pictures in my archives from February and I have no idea why I didn’t notice them earlier.

This is what makes the world go round.

Amélie and Charlie had been happily playing with that little ball by Amélie’s feet. I remember that. But I don’t remember what changed or why Amélie suddenly became morose. But she did. Charlie instinctively came over and tried to comfort her. He stroked and hugged her. He does not like her being upset. Not one little bit. When the cuddles didn’t work, he pulled up her t-shirt and started blowing raspberries. Now look at her face in that last picture… Do you see the beginnings of a smile? There is no-one who can make Amélie as happy as Charlie and no-one who can make Charlie as happy as Amélie. This is it. This is why. This.

5 June 2012 - 9:19 PM katie - pure beauty!

5 June 2012 - 9:37 PM Cass - Thank you Katie-did. I thought these pictures might only speak to me so I'm glad some of the wonderfulness is visible even without the mummy-goggles on (or maybe you have your own mummy-goggles on - ha!).

6 June 2012 - 12:00 AM Ingrid - Beautiful...I've been doing a lot of soul searching lately as to what makes a beautiful photograph. It's about capturing the beauty of a moment and telling a story and you my dear Cass have done just that.

6 June 2012 - 9:10 AM Amélie - Baaaaah you made me all teary!! I am so happy for you and so happy for them that they love each other so much!!!
