On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

These two.

Hanno called me at work today. He said “Amélie is wonderful”. I get excited when I get calls like this. I can’t wait to hear what kind of mischief she’s been up to. Today’s example was… well, I had to go round telling my colleagues about it (yes, my poor colleagues have to put up with me grinning manically and babbling on about my children). After Hanno had told me what she’d done, he put her on the phone. “Hi Amélie” I said. “Hello mum”. “Hanno told me that you changed Charlie’s nappy”. “Well, Hanno was in the shower and Charlie did a poop and I just thought ‘oh I’m just going to change his nappy because it stinks’”. And that’s exactly what she did. She went and got a clean nappy and wipes. She took off his trousers and undid his onesie. She then undid his nappy, wiped his bum, put a fresh nappy on, popped him up and even put the dirty nappy in a special little bag and tied it up, ready for the bin. Hanno came out of the shower to find it all done and dusted. I was amazed. Removing a wet nappy is one thing. Cleaning up a stinky bum is entirely another. I asked her “how did you know what to do?”. Her reply? “I just watch what you and Hanno do”. She is really quite fantastic. As for Charlie, well, let’s just say that getting a nappy on him is usually an olympic sport (it’s how we get our exercise) but I just know that he will have laid there for Amélie, as good as gold, watching his big sister full of awe and admiration. These two. I mean seriously.(Pictures from March. Yes I’m behind. But I’m all done with America now so there’ll be some catching up going on. Also, yes, Charlie is just having a little lie down. He likes to get a bit of a rest in whenever and wherever he can.)
