On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

The Golden Hour

That evening, we sat in the garden as the sun went down. We got bitten by mosquitos and ants and who knows what else. We drank white whine (or maybe just I drank white wine – someone was definitely drinking white wine). Our children ran, rolled and screamed happily. We watched the cows in their field and the sun catching the grass. Charlie and Sam played together for the first time since we arrived. They are about 8 months apart, Sam is older than Charlie. He is the tractor-loving, brave, strong, country boy to Charlie’s bead-loving, dancing, scared of the dark, city boy. But while Sam loves to be clean, Charlie revels in muck. Go figure. Sam wasn’t too impressed by me and, unlike his sister, he wasn’t very keen on having me steal glimpses of him with my big black box. So I’m very glad I managed to get these snaps. As the week wore on, he let me grab a few more pictures. He even started smiling at me and, by the end, I was even allowed to give him a cuddle. Which is a good thing because I had been very patient but I really really wanted a hug from my lovely nephew. Anyway, were was I? Ah yes, the sun going down, setting the sky ablaze…
