On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

Roots

and fruits…Charlie loves playing with potatoes and taking big bites out of raw onions (his new favorite food is pickled onions. Stange child). This morning, he was emptying a bag of potatoes onto the bench in the kitchen, counting them, and then putting them all back in their paper bag… then starting over again, and again, and again. As he was doing it, it struck me how pretty these pink potatoes were and so, of course, I thought I’d take picture of them… Then I got a little carried away. Shame we didn’t have any carrots in the fridge today. Or parsnips. Oh! Or radishes! They would have looked so pretty. Off to the market tomorrow then!!

(if you’re interested, these were taken on a bit of old white MDF left over from making shelves, sat in the light from the window, at f5.6 and 1/50 sec with a 100mm 2.8 lens – and I’ve just noticed the gradient of light across the nectarine picture and it’s annoying me now!).
