On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

My New Jumper

A little while ago, this girl I don’t know said something inspiring about plans. And she got me thinking: I don’t have a plan. I have dreams.

I dream that one day my blog will be popular. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m a teeny tiny bit narcissistic. Maybe I’m insecure and need the validation. Maybe I have something important to say. Bwahaha! No, not really. Not that last one.

I dream that one day I’ll earn some money through photography. Not much. Just enough to support my habit. My PHOTOGRAPHY habit. Thank you very much. Actually, drugs might be cheaper. But I’m a bit of a control freak so they don’t appeal much.

I dream that I’ll become one of those cool older women that younger women look up to and think “that is what I want to be like when I’m older”. My next door neighbour is one of those women. She is very cool. And she looks amazing even at 7am without any makeup. I want to be her when I grow up.

I want to do well at work. But I’m not going to say too much about that because I have colleagues who read this and I don’t want them to laugh at me. I don’t want my colleagues to laugh at me.

In short, I want some spangly red boots and some starry knickers: I want to be Wonder Woman. When I write it all out it does sound rather silly. Especially since I’m making absolutely no efforts to achieve any of this stuff (with the notable exception of my day job where I work very very hard – and I’m not just saying that because I might have colleagues reading this. Promise).

I read something the other day that said “Good things don’t come to those who wait. Good things come to those who work their asses off and never give up”. Personally, I would have said “arses” not “asses” but that small detail aside: yes! How can I complain that no-one reads my blog when I make no effort to promote it (and hardly ever comment on anyone else’s blog to boot – because I spend most of my day at work. Working really really hard. No really). I can’t be upset that I don’t make any money out of photography when I haven’t even vaguely tried to sell any pictures. And I can’t expect to be one of those cool older women if I keep on making (eating) cake and avoiding “fashion” like the plague.

So you see, this girl I’ve never met, she inspired me to to make a plan. I may not actually achieve any of my dreams but at least I might feel like I tried.

The first thing on my plan was to give my blog a make-over.  I designed a whole new header and everything. It was going to be all upbeat and colourful (see below). But then BLURG happened. Something went wrong somewhere. My blog theme (ProPhoto 2) decided to go into a sulk and has been refusing to allow me to upload any new headers or bio picks or anything like that for over a week. I have tried EVERYTHING (everything except shelling out for ProPhoto 3 or 4 or whatever it is now). It just doesn’t want to cooperate. And then I remembered that, about a year ago, I started another blog. I never really told anyone about it. Good thing really since I never posted anything to it. But there it was, just waiting for me. I still can’t change the masthead, but at least it looks a bit different. Fresh. New. And so that’s it. I’m starting over here. This is my new jumper. Do you like it?

PS: the picture of Amélie? Yes, it’s just random. A little randomness never hurt anyone. Face-plants in the playground on the other hand: they hurt. As her cheek demonstrates.

21 March 2012 - 8:59 PM Angie - Hey there, I'm the girl you've never met and I have a few things to say: 1) You're awesome. 2) The name of this website is fab, it makes me chuckle. 3) I LOVE your photos and I'm not just saying that to be nice (I am nice though). You manage to take beautiful photos of kids that are cute yet REALLY cool (über cool) at the same time - that's a very unusual combination and a hard thing to pull off. Go with it, there's gold in them there hills! 4) Look at that photo of Amélie - she is also awesome. 5) xxx
