On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

LTWRL – Week 11

I have a confession: my weekly photos, posted to the LTWRL blog are not always (not often, in fact) current. I would love to be able to take a picture at the weekend, edit it in the next few days, and have it ready to send for posting on the Friday. But my life doesn’t work like that. And so my pictures are sometimes (i.e. frequently) a couple of weeks old. Case in point: this week’s picture was taken on the morning before we few to San Francisco. We had driven to Amsterdam the evening before so we didn’t have to get up in the middle of the night to be there on time. We were staying at the Citizen M hotel at the airport so that we could walk over during the evening to watch planes taking off. That is, of course, exactly what you want to do when you know you’re getting on a long-haul flight the next day and are afraid of flying. But it was a 3 to 1 vote and so I had to give in. Besides, it was kind of beautiful and impressive: all those planes coming and going in such close proximity without bursting into huge balls of deathly fire. Beautiful, impressive, and yes, I admit, a little reassuring. So I slept well, snuggled up next to my sweet girl, in the huge comfy Citizen M bed (I promise I don’t have shares in these hotels, I just thought they were very cool), with Charlie and Hanno fast asleep next door. It was a perfect beginning to our wonderful holiday. Watch this space to find out where we went and who we met.
