On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

Charlie and Amélie sitting on the steps of the town hall in Uccle, where both their births were registered (and where someone had recently celebrated a wedding). I’d not been back to the area in nearly 9 years (Hanno registered Charlie on his own) but we’re thinking of moving and this quieter part of town may be an option. There are gardens here… Whether that’s enough to make up for everything I will miss about where we are now remains to be seen. I love where we live now more than I’ve ever loved anywhere else (with the possible exception of my fantasy life in San Francisco). It will hurt to leave it but we need more space and, without a lottery win, gardens smack-bang in the center of Brussels are not in our price-range. But hey, who wouldn’t give up what they love to keep these two smiling?

I'm going to let the hearts signify my love, actually. yes. whyyyy. why must SF be only a fantasy. we found a french school! and we could be neighbors and we could go down to the beach for picnics every sunday and watch the ships roll by (I feel Justin and Charlie would bond over this well). you should just peruse the openings and caaassuuually apply. theres no harm in that ;)
