On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

Hat and Glasses

I will be forever grateful that I took my camera with me that day. The day of the hat and glasses. I think I got more pictures I love of my chimps in those few hours than I did in the remaining 364 days of the year combined. Ok, that may be a slight exaggeration, but I will have got 6 blog posts (including a Christmas card) out of this one walk.  It was November the 11th. Amistice day. A glorious, sunshiny day… This year has been so topsy-turvy weather wise. It was pretty much winter until the 1st of July at which point we switched, over-night, from bitter cold to scorching hot. And it’s been beautiful ever since (with the occasional wild storm to keep us on our toes). These last few days of December have been glorious. The sun has shone warmly, the sky has been blue, and the flowers on our balcony, completely baffled, have started blooming. I have a horrible feeling that if and when winter does actually hit, it’s going to hurt. And now I’ve written this, winter will of course hit tomorrow. Just to spite me. Oh well…
