On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

Another one for the list…

There’s San Francisco, and Barcelona, and New York… Places that I’ve visited and fallen in love with… And now there’s Seville. As soon as that smell of orange blossom hit me as we stepped out of the train station, I was done for. It was love at first smell. I’ve never been to a place that smelled this good. And then there were the tapas. And the narrow alleyways and wide boulevards and beautiful parks and lovely people… And the Alcazar! But that was day 2. We should start with day 1…

Without a doubt. But I do wonder if I just love any place I get to spend time being with these three people… They could make a muddy field on a rainy day magical for me. And the truth is, when we got back home, I pretended for a while… What if I was coming on holiday here? What if this neighbourhood happened to be where our hotel was? And we spotted that café and that restaurant across the road? Wouldn’t we think we’d lucked out and found the best place to stay ever? And the answer is “yes” because I’m pretty lucky to live where I do. And Brussels is definitely on that list too.
