On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

America 2012 – Part 2 (Monterey)

This is where the “road trip” part of our road trip began, with the short drive from San Fransisco to Monterey. There were two things we wanted to squeeze into our day there: the Aquarium and the Dennis the Menace park. We did both but I only have pictures of the Aquarium. They are some of my favorite pictures from the trip though. Jellyfish rule!Best place in the world, seriously. Especially this room, with it’s three story high glass wall. There were schools of fish, huge sea turtles and shark. I didn’t catch them all but sometimes you just have to enjoy the show with both eyes (instead of having one squeezed shut and the other one pressed up against a small rectangular hole). We ate at the Aquarium too. Not only was the food delicious, but the views were pretty amazing. And they had pop that turned your tongue red…We might have to go back to Monterey one day, just so we can go back to the Aquarium. And so I can get some better night shots of the Bay…And so we can go for a longer walk along the real Cannery Row (I was disappointed not to find anyone sleeping in a pipe but we do think we might have found Doc’s)…Oh, and wait: hotel no. 3!I know, that’s a weird picture, but I just kinda liked all the lines. And that door, there, at the bottom, that was our room for the night. This is what it looked like inside:Before setting off for the next part of our journey, I wanted to get a couple of early morning pictures of the sea. This involved walking down to the waterfront, setting up my tripod, and then realising I’d left my camera battery in the hotel. Hanno ran all the way back for me, found it and then ran all the way down again. He’s my knight in shining armor. Unfortunately, despite all this effort, I still didn’t get what I’d been really hoping for. Mostly because, with two children in tow, it’s a bit more difficult to start clambering over fences and down rocks. Oh well. And we were done. Next step: our breath-taking drive along the California coast (including a police-escorted convoy which was one of the holiday’s highlights for Hanno).

1 May 2012 - 3:18 PM Cass - Thank you lovely Ralph. I do kinda like some of these pictures too but I guess that's because I have the memories to go with them. It always makes me happy to know that a picture I've taken might speak to someone else too, for whatever reason. I know for sure your pictures have that effect on me xxx

3 May 2012 - 8:06 PM Teresa - Oh my goodness! I love the jellyfish photos. Absolutely gorgeous! So calming to watch them float. I think you did a wonderful job with landscape photos. You can do it all! :)

4 May 2012 - 1:09 PM Cass - Thank you Teresa! The whole trip was quite an education... I was outside my photographic comfort zone most of the time. But I liked it!

5 May 2012 - 12:58 PM Angie - These photos are so, so, so ,so amazing - those jellyfish are spooking me out a bit. I love the one where you can see the silhouettes of people heads in the shot too - they give the scale of the place so well... I want to go! In short, WOW!

6 May 2012 - 5:26 PM Cass - Ha! I love that they spook you Angie - they do look a little extra-terrestrial don't they? But they were also really zen, just floating around in their little water worlds.

7 June 2012 - 8:44 PM Marie - am also blown away by your jellyfish pictures
