On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

A real friend

I’m a girl of the internet age. That’s the positive spin. Put another way: I’m a social failure. Nearly all my friends are online. Many of them I have since met in real life, but they mostly live on the other side of the world. So I don’t get to hang out with them on as regular a basis as I’d like. To make matters worse, I don’t live in either of the countries I grew up in. So even old school and university friends are a little too far away for impromptu cups of coffee. That leaves me with the friends I’ve met through work. Luckily, I work with some pretty lovely people. This is one of them. This is a friend who joined the company shortly after I did and whom I immediately admired because she had bright red hair. But I admired her from afar because, as I may have mentioned above, I’m socially awkward. Then she found out I was pregnant and started walking to the station with me so she could carry my bag. That’s how we became friends. Real, actual, within-meeting-distance friends. A friend who will take me to the newest cupcake shops, or to try out her favorite tea shops. A friend I can occasionally meet up with to discover yet another of Brussels’ delicious restaurants. A friend who has seen my flat (and me) in various states of disrepair. And a friend who will come with me when I finally pluck up the courage to go into the Bobbi Brown shop for a makeup lesson… Now, if all my other friends could just move to Brussels, that would be fab.
