On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

A little bit botanical

Actually, they remain surprisingly willing so far. I remember being a lot less enthusiastic about walks when I was little. But maybe that’s because I lived in the countryside so that enforced walking in nature just seemed odd and pointless. My two little city-dwellers, by contrast, actually get a buzz from being able to run around aimlessly without having to watch for cars and dog poo. Have I mentioned the Brussels dog poo problem before? No? Fancy a visit?storyboard-18020150524-GY7C0989 storyboard-179Wouldn’t this (below) be an amazing location for a lovely picture? Yes, that’s what I thought too but neither of my long-suffering models were willing to go and look wistful or romantic so I settled for an empty frame and using my imagination. I’m sure if you, too, just stare at this for long enough you will be able to see a little girl in a diaphanous floaty dress, with a flower crown in her hair, sitting in the grass looking dreamy. Or maybe picking her nose. I don’t know, girls these days!20150524-GY7C1003 20150524-GY7C1042
