On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

A Few of My Favorite Things

Tomorrow, Amélie turns seven. SEVEN. It’s craziness I tell you, craziness! It’s odd though, isn’t it, how it seems impossible that she could be that old but, at the same time, life before Amélie seems like… forever ago. Life before Amélie. Even just saying it seems strange. There was a life without her? Really? What was that like then? Quiet probably. Very calm. With more sleep. And completely empty. Amélie my love, you have no idea. No idea how happy you make us. How completely wonderful you are. How proud we are of you and all that you are. How much you make us laugh. We love you SO much. So so so so much. And we always always will. No matter what.

(we recorded this a couple of weeks ago. The day before, I had asked her some of the same questions, but written down the answers instead of recording her saying them. That’s why she keeps on asking me what’s on the paper. Nearly all of her answers were the same).

15 September 2012 - 6:02 PM ralph - I already said it on the facebook, but have to say it here too. Amelie, you are so SO wonderful dear. I loved your answers, every single one. HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY! I hope it's filled with all your favorite things, and NONE of your Not Favorite Things In the History of Belgium. ;) XO

20 September 2012 - 8:05 AM amanda - Oh we loved this. Watch it a couple of times together. So gorgeous. "Really??" haha about the movie. Marlon loved the armpit answer and skipped back to hear it again and again. She is a wonderful singer!! Will be famous one day. "Hi Amelie, I also like to hear Mummy's farts too. And I also like to smell mummy's armpits. And I love your video. I just love playing snowballs. I want to make a video for you. " OH dear.

Un abrazo, Wigs

22 September 2012 - 5:47 PM Melissa Webb - Oh. My. Goodness. "Mummy's farts!" :D Happy Belated Birthday, Amelie! I, too, enjoyed every single one of your answers. Super adorbale! XO

22 September 2012 - 5:53 PM Cass - I would just like to state, for the record - although, of course, it should go without saying - that Amélie is mistaken: I do not fart. Ever. Nope.

12 October 2012 - 1:03 AM amelia - This is so sweet, I love how it is not cut or changed. Amelie, just the way she is, right then. I'll have to try it with my girl. India watched this with me, and she was just enthralled to hear all the answers. Sadly, her favorite song is also 'call me maybe' but she got so upset when Amelie started singing it. I asked her why, and she said because she wanted to come and sing it with her. Ah... and she said "Han is a funny name for a Daddy." lol.

30 January 2013 - 10:51 PM Jenn - I just want to listen to the three of you speak ALL.DAY.LONG.
