On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

A Beautiful Morning in October

No but really. These are pictures from a beautiful autumn days last year, before the 6 month winter started. I don’t know why I never got round to editing them but I didn’t.

Isn’t she gorgeous, my girl? Full of sunshine and crazy jumping hair.

I can’t remember why just the two of us were out and about. Maybe the boys were still asleep. Maybe we decided to escape. Maybe we just wanted some girl time. I love being out before the rest of the world wakes up. It’s so quiet and beautiful. Mind you, even after the world does start to emerge, there are always places we can go to get away from it all. And that’s exactly what we did. With Charlie and Hanno this time.

Charlie: a wild animal caught in the headlights. What you can’t see in this picture of him is that if you zoom right in, there’s a cobweb – a huge cobweb – right in front of him and it’s super sharp (in fact, I think the camera may have focused on the web instead of on Charlie). It’s very cool finding hidden stories in your pictures.
