On Being Boring

I moved from London to Brussels with my husband nearly 10 years ago. When I told people we were moving, the news was greeted with bemusement: why did we want to move to a city that was possibly the most boring place on earth? Ten years later and I can honestly say that I've had more fun here than I ever did living in London. It might not be the most exciting city in the world but it is a fantastic place to live. It is full of hidden treasures that you probably never get to see as a tourist: wonderful shops, amazing food, great museums and galleries, beautiful architecture, a forest (yes, a whole forest), and so much more... And if that doesn't convince you, well, get on a train and you could be in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne or, yes, London in no more than a couple of hours... Which other city can you say that about?

A Beautiful Goodbye

I met Annie through Instagram (she’s Montgomeryfest if you’re interested). Once we’d plucked up the courage to actually meet, we became instant friends. And then I posted this (click here) and joked that my underground car-park would be an excellent location for a wedding dress shoot. Annie took me up on the joke and we got talking. I thought the idea of playing wedding photographer for a day sounded exciting. And with the weather in Belgium having been extraordinary pretty much since last July our conversations quickly moved from underground to parks and sun-drenched streets. We set a date. Mid-July. Just days before she was due to fly back to the States for good. Annie would bring her wedding dress (and her lovely husband in a tux). I would bring my camera…

And then the sun disappeared. Apparently for good. And with it, all my thoughts of golden evening light, sun flare and dusty haze… Never mind. Romantic kisses in the rain could work. Huddling under a big umbrella, sheltering together in pretty archways… And at least the streets and parks would be empty for us. The big day arrived. No sun… and no rain! Just thick grey cloud. Guh. Well, uninspiring weather wasn’t going to stop us so we decided to head out anyway. With a quick stop in my car-park after all!Thank you Annie and Justin for such a beautiful goodbye. I hope this sneek-peek will keep you going until I have time to get to the park pictures. I had a lot of fun despite the weather and will miss you and your smiles so much when you’re gone – even though we were only just getting to know each other!
